House Blend

About This Coffee
This is the house blend coffee we reach for every morning at the roastery, and the same espresso we pull at the His Word Coffee trailer. It is a freshly roasted small batch coffee that works across every brew method — approachable enough for any morning, with enough character to keep you coming back.
We source specialty-grade Arabica beans from Central America and East Africa, blend them for balance, and air roast them to order in Vancouver, WA. Your bag ships within 1-3 days of roasting, stamped with the roast date, so you know exactly what you are getting.

Why This Coffee
A good house blend is harder to get right than it looks. The goal is not complexity for its own sake — it is consistency. You want a coffee that tastes like itself every single time, whether you are pulling espresso shots at 6 AM or doing a slow pour-over on a Saturday afternoon.
We built House Blend around two regions that balance each other well. Central American beans — grown at high altitude with dense, even structure — bring chocolate sweetness and a smooth, medium body. East African beans contribute citrus brightness that keeps the cup lively without being sharp. Neither component overpowers the other. That balance is the whole point.
We air roast using a fluid bed roaster, which keeps the beans moving in a current of hot air throughout the roast. There is no contact with a drum surface, so there is no scorching. The result is a cleaner, sweeter cup — you taste the natural character of the bean rather than a layer of roasty bitterness on top.
This is the coffee our family drinks every day. It is also the espresso we dial in at the trailer each morning. If it holds up to that standard, we are confident it will work for you.
The Freshness Story
Freshly roasted coffee beans are a genuinely different product than what you find on a grocery shelf. Most store-bought bags were roasted weeks or months before you open them — by then, the volatile aromatics have off-gassed and the oils have started to oxidize. You are tasting a version of the coffee, not the coffee itself.
We roast House Blend in small batches, strictly to order. When you place an order, we schedule your roast and ship within 1-3 days of it coming off the roaster. Your bag arrives in the optimal window: past the intense CO2 off-gassing of the first 48 hours, and well within the peak flavor window of 4-14 days post-roast.
Every bag is stamped with the roast date because you should know exactly what you are buying. Store your beans in the sealed bag with the one-way valve, or transfer to an airtight container, in a cool dry spot. No need to freeze them for short-term storage.
Brew It Any Way You Like
House Blend is built to work across every brewing method — that is the point of a well-designed house blend. The Central American beans deliver the chocolate and caramel foundation; the East African beans add citrus brightness that keeps the cup lively. How much of each character comes through depends on how you brew it.
Drip Coffee Maker — The Everyday Standard
This is the simplest way to enjoy House Blend and the method it was designed for. Standard 1:16 ratio, medium grind, 195-205°F. The drip extraction brings the chocolate and caramel notes forward cleanly, with the citrus brightness rounding out the finish. Works in any drip machine — no precision required. If it tastes flat, grind a little finer; if it tastes sharp, go slightly coarser.
Pour-Over (V60, Chemex, Kalita)
Pour-over separates the two components of the blend more noticeably than drip. The cleaner extraction highlights the citrus brightness from the East African beans, while the chocolate and caramel from the Central American component anchor the cup. Use medium-fine grind, 15g coffee to 240g water at 200-205°F. Bloom with 30g water for 30 seconds, then pour in pulses over 2:30-3:00 for a total brew time of 3:00-3:30. Good choice if you want to taste the blend's complexity rather than just the overall impression.
French Press
French press deepens the chocolate notes and adds body, while softening the citrus edge. Use coarse grind at 1:15 ratio (e.g., 30g coffee to 450g water), water at 195-200°F. Steep 4 minutes, press slowly, pour immediately. The unfiltered oils make for a richer, fuller cup — more the caramel and cocoa side of House Blend than the bright side. A good choice for a substantial morning cup that works well with cream.
Espresso — How We Serve It at the Trailer
House Blend is the same coffee we pull espresso shots with at the His Word Coffee trailer. It dials in well and holds up across different machines. Use 18-20g dose, 1:2 output ratio, 27-30 second pull. Expect balanced shots with good crema, chocolate sweetness, and enough brightness to keep the shot from being flat. It works beautifully in lattes and cappuccinos — the caramel sweetness integrates naturally with steamed milk — and just as well as a straight shot.
Cold Brew
The chocolate and caramel notes translate exceptionally well to cold brew — they sweeten and smooth out, making for a naturally pleasant cold coffee without added sugar. Use coarse grind at 1:8 ratio (1 cup coffee to 8 cups cold water), steep in the refrigerator for 14-18 hours, then strain through a fine mesh or coffee filter. Serve over ice straight or diluted 1:1 with water or milk. The citrus brightness softens significantly in cold extraction — the result leans more toward the rich, sweet side of the blend.

Frequently Asked Questions
What origins are in the House Blend?
The House Blend combines specialty-grade Arabica beans from Central America and East Africa. Both regions contribute washed-process coffees grown at high altitude. Central American beans deliver the chocolate and caramel foundation; East African beans bring the citrus brightness. The specific countries may shift with crop seasons while the flavor profile stays consistent.
How fresh is the coffee when it ships?
We roast every bag to order in small batches at our roastery in Vancouver, WA. Orders ship within 1-3 days of roasting. Each bag is stamped with the roast date so you know exactly when it was made. Coffee hits its peak flavor window around 4-14 days post-roast, so your bag arrives right when it is ready to brew.
Is House Blend good for espresso?
Yes. House Blend is the same coffee we use at our espresso trailer. It pulls balanced shots with good crema, chocolate sweetness, and enough brightness to work well with or without milk. It is equally at home as drip, pour-over, French press, or cold brew.
Do you offer a subscription for House Blend?
Yes. Subscribe and save 10% on recurring orders of House Blend. You choose the frequency — every 2 weeks, 4 weeks, or 6 weeks — and every bag is roasted fresh to order before it ships. You can pause, skip, or cancel anytime.
